Avengers: Infinity War has just released to record-shattering success. The movie has already made over $1 billion in about six days of release, and it's on its way to becoming the biggest movie ever. And yet, plenty of people are harboring some serious reservations about the latest Marvel blockbuster... The past decade of Marvel movies have been a turbulent time for superhero cinema. They've all had their problems, ranging from the truly catastrophic (Green Lantern) to the mildly disappointing (Deadpool). But Marvel has kept churning them out, and their biggest releases have almost always turned out to be the most successful. Aside from Spider-Man: Homecoming, which arrived in 2017 after Sony and Marvel struck an unprecedented deal to share the character's film rights, every single big-screen outing for a Marvel Cinematic Universe hero has come courtesy of Disney/Marvel Studios. As such, it's easy to forget that there was once a time when Sony was considered one of Hollywood's heaviest hitters in terms of comic book adaptations. Even though they've experienced their own struggles over the last decade, it's easy to forget that they once had big franchises like Spider-Man, X-Men, and Venom. All three of those series are now registered to Sony's Marvel subsidiary, but they're still very much alive in some form or another. Spider-Man has been rebooted twice under the guidance of Tom Holland, who came out swinging with his first solo outing in 2017 after tying the character back to Marvel Studios' cinematic universe. Venom is currently being developed by Sony's own Silver Pictures studio for a 2019 release starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom. And there's still room for a rebooted X-Force franchise somewhere in the future, even if Deadpool takes a break from his own series to bring the Merc with a Mouth together with characters like Cable and Domino (Zazie Beetz) in X-Force... But for all of Sony's concern trolling about Spider-Man: Homecoming and its ostensible lack of connection to the MCU, that movie opened just $100 million short of what Captain America: Civil War pulled in. It also only dropped off 26% during its second weekend, outperforming such box office juggernauts as Transformers: Age of Extinction and Star Wars: The Last Jedi over its opening weekend. And yet, Sony is still developing movies that will ostensibly take place in the same reality as Venom and Silver & Black, two other comic book series that are expected to be released in 2018. Sony's Marvel Universe (M.U.) is headed up by Tom Rothman, who has already parted ways with Sony over his decision to move forward with the development of these projects without Marvel's help or involvement. Yet even Rothman couldn't help but see the success that came with Spider-Man: Homecoming. cfa1e77820
